Welbeck injury provides reprieve for Sir Alex’s forward “problem”

Sir Alex Ferguson has a problem. He just has too many awesome forwards. He said as much last week, and that was before his team went and put up 8 on Arsenal, a tally high enough to beat most Big Ten football teams.

It almost sounds like some sort of clever prank, like a viral marketing campaign sure to reveal some sort of punch line sooner or later. Side after side in the EPL need forwards. Arsene Wenger would probably swear off puffy jackets for good to get someone in the squad to complement Robin van Persie. Stoke and Fulham don’t seem to even have any forwards on their roster. Swansea is yet to score in three matches. (more…)

THURS Apr. 7 (AM): Rooney, Europa League, USOC, MLS

Wayne Rooney’s two-match ban was upheld by the FA, meaning he will not face Manchester City in the FA Cup semifinal. The striker, who was caught swearing into a television camera after he scored his third goal against West Ham last weekend, appealed the ban, but was unsuccessful.

Oguchi Onyewu believes his club,  FC Twente, can win both the Eredivisie and the Europe League, while Clint Dempsey says he can play with more freedom under Fulham manager Mark Hughes, in two interviews with the American stars.

TUES March 1 (PM): Chelsea, FA Cup and Maurice Edu

Chelsea took a big step towards defending their Premier League title with a 2-1 win over Manchester United this afternoon. Wayne Rooney (who many argue shouldn’t have even been playing) struck first for Man U, but second-half goals from David Luiz and Frank Lampard sealed the victory for the Blues. Man U skipper Nemanja Vidic was sent off with a second yellow card during stoppage time, meaning he’ll miss the Red Devil’s game Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.

In other scores, Reading upset Everton 1-0 in FA Cup play.

On the eve of their FA Cup replay with Leyton Orient, Marouane Chamakh feels a win over the League 1 side will give the Gunners a needed boost after their heartbreaking Carling Cup loss to Birmingham, while Leyton Orient’s chairman is optimistic about his side’s chances.

Sports Illustrated looks at Maurice Edu’s blossoming career in Scotland.

Australia’s A-League has been reduced to 10 sides after Football Federation Australia deemed the North Queensland Fury too financially unstable. The FFA has been widely criticized for mishandling the growth of the league, as most of the teams in the league rely on FFA handouts and attendance has dropped.

Rising MLS star Teal Bunbury will look to make a return to Sporting Kansas City by mid-March. The forward injured his elbow two weeks ago during a pre-season game.

MON Feb. 14 (AM): On Ronaldo, Davies, Americans Abroad, EPL, and Champs

Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima, or just Ronaldo to most, has retired. The three-time FIFA player of the year and the World Cup’s all-time leading goal scorer, currently with Corinthians in Brazil, brings an end to a remarkable career.

Another encouraging display by Charlie Davies saw the striker record two goals and an assist in 45 minutes of action as DC United finished up their Florida training camp with a 4-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago’s U-20′s.

Stuart Holden may have had his third Premiership goal taken away, but the American midfielder provided an assist and went the full ninety in Bolton’s 2-0 win over Tim Howard and Everton. Highlights after the break:

FRI Jan. 14 (AM): On the MLS Superdraft, EPL, Transfers, and Qatar

The Houston Dynamo, typically quiet but stealthy (see Geoff Cameron) in the MLS draft, are receiving widespread praise for their first round coups, which landed defender/midfielder Kofi Sarkodie and forward Will Bruin. Perhaps the most excited? Houston coach Dominic Kinnear, who believes 2011 to be Houston’s “best draft,” at least on paper.

Vancouver impressed few by making Omar Salgado the No. 1 pick in the MLS Superdraft, but the choice certainly pleased Portland fans, who can prepare themselves for a Darlington Nagbe and Kenny Cooper strike force. The former FC Dallas star looks set to make his return to the MLS as a member of the Timbers.

WED Nov. 24 (AM): On MLS, Champions League, WC Bidding, and Biting

The MLS season may be over, but preparations for the next are already beginning as the 2011 Expansion Draft gets under way today at 2:00 PM ET. A list of all the unprotected players Vancouver and Portland will be able to choose from. The 2011 MLS Superdraft will take place on January 13. Follow the draft here.

The “winning” lunge from Mac Kandji that led to George John’s own-goal (and Colorado’s 117th minute winner) has torn the forward’s ACL.

Champions League has returned this week. Chelsea and Real Madrid, both already through to the elimination rounds, cruised to victory, although Madrid is facing a UEFA investigation for “deliberate red cards.” The standings after Tuesday’s fixtures.

After winning their first three matches in record fashion, Arsenal have dropped their last two in less than inspiring fashion. The loss puts their chances of advancing in Champions League – something that seemed a virtual certainty two matches ago – in serious jeopardy. The struggling Gunners will need all three points from their final match against Partizan Belgrade to essentially ensure progression, while a tie or loss opens a massive door for Braga – a team they beat 6-0 back in September – to jump them for the second-place spot. They’ve also lost Cesc Fabregas for another 2-3 weeks.

A look at one of the decisive decisions in the match.

FRI Nov. 19 (AM): On Davies, Aguedelo, MLS, and England

As the weekend approaches and Thanksgiving beckons, Friday news tries its best to get you there quicker…

The Washington Post takes another look at Charlie Davies’ long road to recovery. Sochaux insists Davies still has a ways to go before he is back to Ligue 1 fitness, which certainly begs the question of just how far from fitness he was prior to the World Cup.

Red Bulls coach Hans Backe has expressed some (understandable) concern at holding onto 17-year-old starlet Juan Agudelo. Following his goal against South Africa, that task may get even harder.

One national team star, Landon Donovan, was impressed by the team’s display in South Africa.
