WED. Aug 31 (PM): Transfers Deadline, Holden’s Back, and Bradley

The most exiting day for soccer fans when the best match is a Carling Cup match between Leyton Orient and Bristol Rovers is almost over. With money, players, and agents busy traveling across Europe here are some of today biggest transfers. By the way Leyton would go on to win the match 3-2 with a goal by Stephen Dawson in the 90th minute.

Arsenal spent the day trying to improve their squad signing Per Mertesacker, Andre Santos, Yossi Benayoun, and Mikel Arteta. The new players for Arsenal will be much needed help for a club that is struggling. The question will still remain if they are good enough to help Arsene Wenger keep his job.

Craig Bellamy is heading back to Liverpool, and Raul Meireles is leaving Liverpool to play for Chelsea.

A smart move for Michael Bradley with the American midfielder moving to play for Chievo. Serie A should be a perfect fit for Bradley’s talents.

The strangest transfer of the day goes to Manchester City signing Owen Hargreaves.

Stuart Holden returned to action playing for the Bolton reserves after his horrific knee injury. It will be good to see Holden  wearing the USA kit soon.

WED Apr. 6 (PM) Ronaldo, Champions League and Liverpool

In an unexpected report Milan could go after Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The president of Milan, Silvio Berlusconi expressed that his club could make a move for the Portugese star this summer. In the end it will unlikely happen do to the inflated price that Real would place for Milan to get Ronaldo and most important why would Real sell a player they invested 94 million euros. Also, the price of one Ronaldo is not worth four or five quality players Milan could get for the same price.

Although this move is unlikely Jose Mourinho states if Ronaldo leaves he will leave too. More reasons for why Madrid should not sell Ronadlo; with the possiblity of losing one of the best players and one of the best coaches in world. (more…)

THURS March 10 (PM): Europa League harsh toward English, Wenger harsh toward UEFA, FIFA opens match-fixing probe

It wasn’t the best day in Europa League for EPL teams. Manchester City will be facing an uphill battle in the second leg after Andrei Shevchenko’s Dynamo Kiev side got the better of them 2-0 Thursday. Liverpool also lost their match, a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Braga. All sorts of other matches around the continent…Soccernet has a good round-up.

Speaking of sustaining blows, Arsene Wenger lashed out at UEFA after the European body announced it will bring charges against Wenger and his player Samir Nasri for their behavior toward the match officials in Tuesday’s Champions League defeat.

The referee for that clash isn’t the only one getting a little extra attention. FIFA is investigating six match officials who officiated two friendly matches in Turkey on suspicion of match fixing.

FRI Feb 18 (AM): Onstad, Giggs, MLS, EPL, and Friday Fixtures

This Friday we’ll start with old people…well, at least by soccer standards. Two ageless wonders are back in the news as they continue to defy our typical understanding of when one is supposed to call it quits. Ryan Giggs, 37, has inked a one-year contract to stay with Manchester United through 2012, extending an already remarkable first-career for United that dates back to March of 1991.  Meanwhile, DC United have revealed that assistant coach Pat Onstad, 43, will come out of retirement to help the club deal with a goalkeeping crisis following a spate of injuries. Onstad, who played eight seasons with the Houston Dynamo and San Jose Earthquakes, holds the MLS mark for goals-against average at 1.12. For those looking for some investment advice, take it from my father:  there’s about to be a “serious run on grecian formula sales in the DC metro area…”

Toronto FC fans can exhale. Dwayne de Rosario is happy again.

US Soccer has revealed its nominees for the National Soccer Hall of Fame class of 2011.

WED Feb. 26 (AM): On Davies, Bunbury, MLS, Champs, and ‘Pool

Charlie Davies is officially a member of DC United, securing a 12-month loan-move to DC from French side Sochaux. Davies will be formally introduced at a press conference today at 2:00 PM ET.

Another promising US star’s rise has been temporarily sidetracked. Teal Bunbury was hospitalized with a dislocated elbow following a collision in Sporting Kansas City’s preseason loss to the Houston Dynamo and will miss several weeks recovering.

Controversy is brewing in the Heath Pearce trade from Dallas to Chivas, as it appears Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman was not keen on the move.

The first matches of the Champions League Knockout Stage is off and running. Tottenham escaped Milan – and an absolutely insane Gennaro Gattuso, labeled “crazy” by Spurs boss Harry Redknapp – with a 1-0 victory, while Schalke and Valencia tied 1-1 as in a record-setting day for Raul.

Are Man United vulnerable? And other questions that will be answered this weekend in the EPL

JON ARNOLD – The Premier League is heating up, with the league title once again looking more like an actual race than a sprint to the end by Manchester United. Let’s take a look at some questions that will be (or might be) answered in each of this weekend’s fixtures:

Manchester United v. Manchester City

Are Man United vulnerable?

Last weekend taught us the Red Devils are beatable, but this weekend will tell us far more about the vulnerability of the Premier League leaders. Dropping a game away to bottom-of-the-table Wolves can be seen as a sort of throw-away. A loss against cross-town rival and title contender Man City won’t be taken so kindly. Whatever happens United will still emerge from this weekend atop the league, but how long they’ll stay there will almost certainly be determined by this result. (more…)

TUES Feb 8 (AM): McClaren, Reina, Malouda, and MLS

McClaren’s former assistant Pierre Littbarski will take over for the rest of the season.

With the retirement of Edwin van der Sar, Pepe Reina could be the next player to leave Anfield for a rival club.

Following Liverpool’s tactical mastery of Chelsea, Jonathan Wilson of the Guardian examines the place of three center-backs in today’s game.

Chelsea winger Florent Malouda says he would love to finish his career in Brazil.

In MLS, FC Dallas signed Brazilian midfielder Ricardo Villar and Portland stiker Bright Dike will likely miss all of the Timbers inaugural season with a torn ACL.

Lille is the new Barcelona according to Paul Marshall.

MON Feb. 7 (AM): On Torres, EPL, Davies, FIFA, and MLS

During a weekend packed with goals, the marquee match mustered just one as Chelsea lost 1-0 at home to Liverpool. It was a quiet debut for Fernando Torres against his old side Liverpool. The star striker made little impact in the match as Chelsea were unable to take advantage of a Manchester United loss and Arsenal draw. Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti feels that it will take some time for Torres to adapt to the squad, while Torres himself was “not expecting” some of Liverpool’s tactics. Martin Rogers hasn’t been so kind.

Clint Dempsey was on target again for Fulham, drawing the Cottagers level in the 78th minute in a game that ended 2-2. Villa’s newest American addition, Michael Bradley, was not in Gerard Hullier’s 18. Highlights after the break.
