TUES March 15 (AM): Champions League, Capello and MLS

Manchester United and Inter Milan became the next two teams to punch their ticket to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. Man U disposed of Marseille with a 2-0 win while the defending champions beat Bayern 3-2 to advance 3-3 on away goals.

It’s expected that Fabio Capello will hand the captain’s armband back to John Terry before England’s European qualifier next week. Capello stripped Terry of the armband after his affair with teammate Wayne Bridge’s wife made headlines. It’s excepted that Terry’s successor Rio Ferdinand will not be pleased.

Germany coach Joachim Low extended his contract with the team for two additional years.

This exists. And it’s awesome.

Major League Soccer kicks off tonight with the Galaxy taking on the Sounders. Los Angeles thinks they’ll win. So does Seattle.

FRI Feb. 18 (PM): Mourinho, Sneijder, Home Grown, and Marcelo

This weekend Jose Mourinho has the opportunity to do something that is unprecedented in all sports. He has the chance to go nine straight years without a home defeat, if Real Madrid can beat Levante. Love him or hate him the “Special One” has been successful wherever he has coached, and this proves how great of a tactician he is. Mourinho’s last home loss in a league match came when he was coaching Porto. This means he never lost a home game with both Chelsea and Inter Milan, and has yet to lose one with Real Madrid.

Inter are resting attacking midfielder Wesley Sneijder in their weekend match against Cagliari for their match Champions League match against Bayern Munich. The Dutchman re-injured his groin, but should be fit against Bayern.

FC Dallas is slowly becoming the MLS’ best academy, after signing a total of six home grown players. Keeper Richard Sanchexz agreed to a contract on Friday, and the only upsetting news for American fans is plays for U17 Mexican team. Dallas was not the only club to add a home grown player with Sporting KC signing Kevin Ellis from their academy

And finally Marcelo says something most soccer fan would agree is ridiculous.

Serie A Winter Transfer Winners and Losers

ANTHONY MANNINO- The Serie A did not experience the same high priced transfers that developed in the Premier league, but there were numerous noteworthy signings. Also, what was evident were the clubs signing positions of need.

The biggest loser- Sampdoria

By far Sampdoria was hurt the most during the January transfer window.  The club sold Giampaolo Pazzini and Antonio Cassano, their star strikers from last season that accounted for 28 of Sampdoria’s 49 goals last season. (more…)

FRI Dec. 24: Happy Holidays, Leonardo, Best XI, and Modric

Happy holidays everyone from USA10kit. It’s time to get out your best Christmas sweater and be hopeful that a new USA jersey is waiting for you under the tree.  A couple gifts the national team could use are a healthy Charlie Davies, Oguchi Onyewu finding a new team, and some goals from their strikers.

The best XI for goal.com includes no surprises with both Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi  on the squad. There is a slight surprise that Hernanes was picked over Javier Pastore, but the Brazilian is having a great season with the surprise team in Serie A, Lazio.

Big news in Serie A with Leonardo taking over as coach of Inter Milan after coaching AC Milan last year. The Brazilian will replace Rafael Benitez, who was unimpressive as the Inter coach the first half of the season. Leonardo has a lot of work with Inter currently in seventh place and 13 points behind rivals Milan.

Will Benitez be Inter’s Manager in the Future

ANTHONY MANNINO - The struggles at Inter Milan have been well documented this season with the club in fifth place and seven points behind league leaders AC Milan. Pressure has been placed on new manager Rafael Benitez to turn the season around, but would it be right to fire Benitez if Inter’s struggles continue or should he receive more time?

The club is not used to losing after winning five straight Serie A five years in a row and their fantastic treble last year. This places Benitez in a rough spot since the club has the mentality that the Scudetto is theirs. After winning once in their past five games, more pressure is being placed on the Spaniard.

Although Inter has struggled, Benitez should be allowed to prove that he is worthy to manage Inter. Inter’s luck could easily begin to turn around just like Roma’s recent emergence from bottom of the table to seventh in Serie A. (more…)

Winners and Losers of Serie A

ANTHONY MANNINO - The past weekend was a huge deciding factor for the Scudetto and Champions League positions for Serie A. Before the weekend, the top six teams were separated by five points with all six teams poised to face each other. With not much disparity between the top teams, these fixtures become more important with clubs having the opportunity to turn a three point lead into a six point lead or become tied with the leaders. This leads us to our weekend’s winners and losers in Serie A, and also who did just enough to keep their title hopes alive. (more…)
