MON Sept. 12 (AM): MLS, CCL, Europe, and World Cups

Saturday night was bittersweet for DC United. Charlie Davies recorded a hat trick, but the 3-0 victory cost United Chris Pontius, who will very likely miss the remainder of the season following a tibia fracture suffered in a collision with David Junior Lopes.

Between five and nine games remain for MLS clubs as the jockeying for playoff qualification continues. One team currently on the outside looking in? Star-studded NY.

David Beckham has been offered a new one-year contract by MLS.

A rundown of how Americans fared abroad.

CONCACAF Champions League is back in action this week.

So are the Champions League Group Stages in Europe. Here’s the schedule. As AC Milan gear up to face Barcelona, they’ll have to do it without Zlatan Ibrahimovich. Meanwhile, Chelsea have their own forward decisions to figure out, and Fernando Torres isn’t helping his cause. FRI May 13 (AM): Blatter, Bradley, FA Cup, and More

A threat or a warning? Sepp Blatter has stated that, should he not be re-elected as FIFA president, “irreversible damage” will be done.

“What is at stake is the very survival of Fifa. I am confident I will be able to win the elections with a clear majority of two-thirds of the votes. South America, North America, Europe, Oceania and a considerable part of Africa and Asia will continue to support my ideas. However it is still worth considering what the alternative would be: nobody [in charge],” said Blatter.

Coach Bob Bradley will be in attendance for the D.C. United v. Colorado match this weekend (Sat. 7:30 PM ET), which has some speculating that a former national team regular could be getting another look … possibly for the upcoming Spain friendly.

Ahead of the FA Cup final at Wembley between Manchester City and Stoke (Sat. 10:00 AM ET), Roberto Mancini is preaching caution. His side may have to win it without Carlos Tevez, too.

Analysis of my Gold Cup Roster

ANTHONY MANNINO- Just a heads up before you read this article check out my Gold Cup roster. As usually this roster continues to show off the strength that the US national team has in the midfield. I have left a couple key players home to watch the Gold Cup like Johnathan Spector, Edinson Buddle, Sacha Kljestan, Jonathan Bornstien, Jay Demerit, and Marcus Hahnemann. Spector will be left home because with the emergence of Chandler and Lichaj, he is our best right back. Also midfield, the position he has started to play for West Ham is our deepest position and having him on the roster does not improve the team. Edson Buddle has been unlucky with his chances with the US national team. His lack of experience at the International level and his age do not help the American Forward. Also, quiet frankly two goals in ten appearences in the second league in German does not merit a roster spot for a player his age. I have never been a Jonathan Bornstein fan. For me he is not good enough and I would rather give a young left back the chance to shine behind Bocanegra. To many mistakes and not a beneficial going forward in attack is what will keep Bornstein home. (more…)

Looking ahead to the Gold Cup

ANTHONY MANNINO- Although the Gold Cup is still a month away it is time to start thinking what the United States squad will look like. Thankfully, other than Stuart Holden most of the American player pool looks healthy. With a spot for the Confederations Cup on the line in 2013 the US will bring a star-studded roster. I foresee a roster that has experience players with some injection of young talented players. So if I were manager of the US squad here is who I would bring and why they would be on the roster.

Keepers

TIm Howard-The starting American keeper would be my rock in defense. I know that if all ten of my outfield players get beat Howard will be there to stop any potential goals. If he plays like he did against Argentina the Americans should be head to the Confederations Cup in Brazil.

Brad Guzan- My quality back-up keeper for the US, Guzan has benefited this season from a loan deal with Hull City. I know if need be Guzan is a solid back up, and could fill in if there is an injury to Howard.

David Yelldell- At 38 its time for Marcus Hahnemann to move aside for younger keepers and I would pick David Yelldell to replace him. Being third keeper may mean that Yelldell will not see any playing time in the Gold Cup, but it is important he trains with the US team for the future. With only 45 minutes of experience Yelldell needs more time training if he his placed into action in the future. (more…)

FRI Apr. 8 (PM) Rossi, Torres, Transfers, and CD9

American born Guiseppe Rossi has been stellar this year and his agent Federico Pasorello says the striker is ready to move to a club that contends for trophies. A bid by Tottenham was turned down this past January, and Rossi will most likely move to play in Italy. The Italian forward has scored 15 goals this season and with a 5-1 victory over Twente this week, his club Villarreal are likely to be in the semi-finals of Europa League. Rossi deserves to move onto a bigger club; he has become one of the best strikers in La Liga and numerous clubs will want to sign him.  It will be interesting to see what club he joins, Juventus are interested and with Rossi on their roster the Old Lady could return to their former dominance.

After failing to score this week against Manchester United, Fernando Torres’ current goalless drought is now 10 games and continuing, dating back to his time with Liverpool. However, Chelsea captain John Terry is confident he will score this weekend against Wigan. The Spanish forward has run into a bit of bad form and has made it easy for skeptics to doubt he’s worth the 50 million Euro transfer fee that Chelsea paid for him. Eventually he will score, he has to right? (more…)

Davies Needed for the Gold Cup

ANTHONY MANNINO- After one and a half years of working to get to the moment when Charlie Davies could step onto the field following his horrific accident, Davies was introduced for DC United in the 53rd minute. That was one huge step for the American striker to get on the pitch, but it is not all that Davies wanted. He wanted to come back and show Coach Bob Bradley, his club Sochaux, American soccer fans, and the world that he could impact games once again.

This past Saturday Davies did just that by scoring two goals in his first professional game since the accident. The first goal was a penalty and would have been a nice way for Davies to start his return, but it does little to prove naysayers that Davies is still talented. I do like that he approached the penalty area and requested to take the penalty, because it shows his desire to score. (more…)

FRI Feb. 25 (PM): Serie A, Carling Cup, Napoli, and CD9

After the recent struggles in Europe, Serie A will no longer have four teams qualify for Champions League. Deservedly so, after AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Roma failed to win the first leg of the Champions League. The only defense the Serie A has is that Inter did win the Champions League last year, so the Serie A has the best club team in the world. This is a fair argument and Serie A is a better league then Bundesliga, but they have not shown it. The downfall can partly be credited to the match fixing scandal that sent Juventus to Serie B. Historically a great club, Juventus has been a mere above average squad the past couple of years. (more…)

FRI Feb. 25 (AM): Beckham, Sarkodie, Edu, Europa, and More

David Beckham is back with the Galaxy, returning to train with the MLS side after a six-week stint training with Tottenham. While a loan move never fully transpired, preventing Beckham from representing Spurs in actual Premier League fixtures, the LA midfielder has been quick to assure the media and Galaxy supporters that his commitment to his MLS side was never in doubt.

“My main objective was to get fit for the Galaxy and for the MLS season…My main objective wasn’t to play for a Premiership team. Even if I would have been on loan, even if I would have played the games, this is the time I was always going to come back.”

The New York Times has a piece on Houston Dynamo rookie Kofi Sarkodie – NCAA Champion, high school valedictorian, and royalty.

Alejandro Bedoya could be on his way to Birmingham City as Alex McLeish ponders a potential move for the American midfielder.

Maurice Edu’s 92nd minute goal led Rangers through to the Round of 16 in the Europa League. Edu was in the right place (in truth, there were about five Rangers players who looked ready to score) at the right time to finish David Healy’s cross and send the Scottish side through on away goals. Edu’s goal starts at 4:56 after the break.
