Could Guardiola’s Tactical Shift in the Champions League Final Herald a New System?

ZAC LEE RIGG - In the 2009 Champions League final, Pep Guardiola radically shifted his attacking tactics from the slaloming system Frank Rikjaard had left him to the new, cynically dominant side his own Barcelona would become. The flair was and is still there, but the unconventional move to shift Lionel Messi central and have the forwards attack from wide positions heralded a more ruthless, efficient outlook.

In that match, Sir Alex Ferguson was flummoxed and his side never looked like recovering once Samuel Eto’o scored from his unpredictable right-hand position. Later Messi used all five-foot-six-and-a-half-inches of his height to soar highest in the box and head the killer second goal past Edwin van der Sar.

Guardiola had a trick up his sleeve in the 2011 final as well. Instead of using Messi as a false nine, he deployed him as a conventional 10. David Villa played furthest forward as a pure striker, and Pedro switched from the right flank to the left. No one bothered using the space down the right.

Check this graph by Opta of average positions in the first half. Note how Messi’s position essentially makes it a diamond midfield. Also check out how far forward Patrice Evra could roam, because no one was pinning him back. Then read on. (more…)

WED Apr. 27 (AM): Champions League(s), WC Qualifying, MLS, and EPL

Tonight’s main event kicks off at 10:00 PM ET (Fox Soccer Channel) in front of a sold-out crowd at Rio Tinto Stadium in Salt Lake City. Real Salt Lake host Monterrey in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final following a brilliant effort the MLS side to take a 2-2 draw out of hot and humid Monterrey in the first leg. It may not quite be the “Lake Placid moment for U.S. soccer” that RSL general manager Garth Lagerwey says it will be if RSL prevails, but it would certainly have a place in MLS’ landmark victories.

Watching with Lagerway will be RSL midfielder Kyle Beckerman, who won’t be able to participate in tonight’s match due to yellow card accumulation but will be able to enter the field for the medal and trophy presentation.

Oh yeah, and there’s another game at 2:45 PM ET…one which, for Barcelona skipper Pep Guardiola, can’t come any sooner. Guardiola launched an expletive-filled response to Jose Mourinho’s earlier comments – in which he claimed Guardiola had joined a whole new group of coaches: those who complain about correct calls – that are sure to stoke the fires even more…at least for those watching, as Guardiola believes a war of words will have no impact on those playing.

WED Apr. 6 (PM) Ronaldo, Champions League and Liverpool

In an unexpected report Milan could go after Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The president of Milan, Silvio Berlusconi expressed that his club could make a move for the Portugese star this summer. In the end it will unlikely happen do to the inflated price that Real would place for Milan to get Ronaldo and most important why would Real sell a player they invested 94 million euros. Also, the price of one Ronaldo is not worth four or five quality players Milan could get for the same price.

Although this move is unlikely Jose Mourinho states if Ronaldo leaves he will leave too. More reasons for why Madrid should not sell Ronadlo; with the possiblity of losing one of the best players and one of the best coaches in world. (more…)
