Channel Surfing: Your MLS Viewing Guide for the Weekend

Here’s a quick look at what you’ll want to have your eyes on as Week 10 of MLS action gets started Saturday.

Must See

You’re going to want to watch the Houston Dynamo vs. D.C. United, 4:30E, NBCSN.

When a MLS team gets a new stadium it’s a lot like when a buddy gets married. Some fans are perfectly content with what they already have, others might not have quite as pretty a partner but they’re still settled, and then there will be the outright envious who are single and would love to take the lucky guy’s place. But no matter what role you’re in, you want to see it because at the end of the day you’re happy for the guy. And you don’t even have to suit up for this one. (more…)

What We’re Watching this Weekend

With the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, and Serie A on break, England, Scotland, and Spain play host to our attention as 2011 begins. That doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to hold that attention. Here’s what we’ll be watching this weekend.

England

Liverpool v. Bolton (Sat. 10:00 AM ET): Any guesses as to Roy Hodgson’s New Year’s resolutions? The Red’s boss needs a spectacular 2011 if he’d like to keep his job at Anfield. Stuart Holden will be absent for Owen Coyle’s side, who will look to get back to winning ways.

Tottenham v. Fulham (Sat. 10:00 AM ET): Fulham are back in the relegation zone following Wigan’s draw with Arsenal on Wednesday. Interest in Clint Dempsey has continued to rise, but with Bobby Zamora still recovering from injury and no one else consistently scoring, Mark Hughes will be reluctant to part with the American during the January transfer window. Fulham will face Spurs away in a London derby hoping to claim only their second away win of the season.

What We’re Watching this Weekend

While a little match at Stamford Bridge will steal most of the headlines, another game is sure to provide plenty of thrills and – quite possibly – chills. Tout Puissant Mazembe Englebert of the Democratic Republic of Congo will take on Inter Milan in the finals of the Club World Cup. Les corbeaux - or, the crows – will face the European Champions Inter in the United Arab Emirates, with kickoff scheduled for 12:00 PM ET on Saturday. It’s been a stunning run for the African champions – although they aren’t surprised – and a win over Inter would be more that just icing on the cake. Either way, Inter’s Samuel Eto’o already believes they’ve already made Africa proud.

Here’s what else we’ll be checking out:

What We’re Watching this Weekend

Europe will garner most of the attention with some high-profile matches on tap this weekend. But stateside, Division I Men’s Soccer is nearing it’s ultimate showdown. Louisville and North Carolina face off tonight (Fri. 8:30 PM ET, ESPN2) with Akron and Michigan following at 11:00 PM ET (ESPN2). The winners will meet in the College Cup Final on Sunday at 4:00 PM ET (ESPN2) in Santa Barbara, CA. While Louisville is the top seed in the tournament, Akron boasts perhaps the most talented side in the country. The bracket here.

England

Two key matches in the Premier League this weekend won’t determine the champion, but could go a long way in making title contenders’ intentions known to the rest of the league. With Patrice Evra running his mouth and Arsene Wenger coolly firing back ahead of their sides’ clash, Chelsea’s near freefall, and Tottenham’s surge, there are plenty of storylines before the weekend has even begun.

Serie A Match 16 Preview

Juventus v. Lazio

Week in and week out Lazio keeps hanging around the top of Serie A table and are starting to look more and more like contenders. After an impressive 3-1 victory over Inter Milan, Lazio faces another tough test against Juventus. The Roman club is currently in second place only three points behind league leaders AC Milan. The good news for Lazio is their playmaker, Mauro Zarate, is starting to come alive and has two goals and an assist in his past four matches. If Lazio can win this game they may start to believe they can win the Scudetto after two impressive victories in a row. Juventus enters the match in third place, only three points behind their opponent Lazio. The return of injured Milos Krasic has helped Juventus offensively and he will look to link with Juventus’ leading scorer Fabio Quagliarella. Coming into the match Juventus has an 11 game unbeaten run, but they have only received all three points in five of those matches. This may be good enough to allow the Old Lady to qualify for Champions League, but if they want to win the Scudetto the need to get some victories.

Prediction: Tie- should be an interesting match-up with Juventus coming into the match scoring the most goals and Lazio has given up the least amount of goals. (more…)

What We’re Watching this Weekend

With the next 12 years of World Cups finally decided, we can turn our attention back to soccer present and let Brazil, Russia, and Qatar worry about building stadiums made of giant TV’s, paying off Zinedine Zidane, security, and the million other inner-workings of hosting the world’s largest sporting event.

There may be no MLS left to satiate our domestic apetite, but some interesting European games and the Mexican league final should do. Here’s what we’ll be checking out this weekend.

England

Arsenal v. Fulham (Sat. 10:00 AM ET): Winless in November, Clint Dempsey and the Cottagers will look to upset the Gunners, mid-week winners over Wigan in the Carling Cup, and climb out of relegation danger.

Chelsea v. Everton (Sat. 10:00 AM ET): After last weekend’s embarrassing loss to West Brom, Everton will seek to add to Chelsea’s losing woes. The Blues will be boosted by the much needed returns of Michael Essien and John Terry.

Serie A Match 14 Preview

AC Milan v. Sampdoria

Top of the table AC Milan takes on Sampdoria, who finally won their first game after club president Riccardo Garrone decided Antonio Cassano would no longer be a part of the club. Cassano will sorely be missed by the club and would have been a great asset for Sampdoria in this match.

Instead the club will look for striker Giampaolo Pazzini to lead the team after his hat trick performance last week. Italian midfielder Angelo Palombo looks to be available for Sampdoria after his injury, and his presence will be needed to break up the Milan attack.  Speaking of the Milan attack look no further than number 11 Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swedish striker has scored in four of the past five matches for Milan and is the reason why the club is in first place. The Rossoneri are coming into the match with a four game winning streak and have a three point advantage over second place Lazio. Milan has been dominant on defense and offense this season and will need to continue their dominance against Sampdoria.

Prediction: Milan- Ibrahimovic has been unstoppable this season and a Cassano-less Sampdoria does not pose as much of a threat. (more…)
