For those wondering whether the U.S. will send the best players it can to the Olympics, should it qualify this spring, Jurgen Klinsmann says yes, definitely.
The likes of Altidore, Williams, Chandler and Shea would all be part of the squad, hopefully. And Landon Donovan says he wants in, too.
Donovan, whose attack heavy age group missed out on the Athens Olympics in 2004 when they lost to Mexico in the one-off semifinal in qualifiers, tells ESPN he wants to play in London this summer, just like LA Galaxy teammate David Beckham.
As one of three overage players, he would certainly be a great addition. And he has the right to taste Olympic glory again (Donovan was a young part of the team that placed fourth in 2000).
But this is an attack heavy team that needs some defensive help, so he might not be the best fit. What do you think?
I think considering what Donovan brings to the table it would be a no brainer to take him. The younger players might learn something from him. Donovan has shifted his game from relying on his speed to becoming a great passer as we’re seeing in his current loan spell with Everton. Use the other two spots for defense if necessary, but if Donovan wants in, take him.
I like it, but how much say will the LA Galaxy have in the matter.? He has already been on-loan with Everton and WC 14 qualifiers are going on during the summer. I doubt they want their best player playing in the Olympics since he has already had/will have a busy year.
It will be a busy year for Donovan if he plays. He also has CONCACAF Champions League beside regular duties with the LA Galaxy, and world cup qualifying.
I think the three over-age players should be defensive minded. If I was going to select an attacking over-age player it would be Dempsey. He is already based in London, and he never had the opportunity to represent the states in the Olympics. Sorry landon i think in this scenario you will be left out.
