News and Views for Monday, Oct 31st

U.S.

The fallout from the away legs of the MLS playoffs over the weekend continues, with Landon Donovan not shy about calling out Rafa Marquez and the Red Bulls.

After a 2-1 upset on the road in which Philly threatened to equalize at any moment, Houston says they’ll be ready to receive the Union at home, no matter what formation Peter Nowal opts for.

The Sounders’ chances of overturning Real Salt Lake’s 3-0 cushion took a boost from injuries to RSL’s central defenders, and a hit from the news about Mauro Rosales.

Finally, the USSF has a huge roster announcement coming up this week, and not the one you might think. The U-23 pool will reveal a ton about who’s in and who’s out of the future plans of U.S. soccer.

Home Sides Struggle in MLS Conference Semifinals

When it comes to the two-legged version of the MLS Conference Semifinals, the label home field “advantage” is tossed around quite liberally.

After all, it’s difficult to truly understand what benefits a team more – playing at home first or last, in a two-game winner take all series.

Regardless of what the right answer is, three of the four teams playing host this weekend in the MLS Cup playoffs couldn’t get it done on home turf, and have to reverse the scoreline traveling away.

Certainly the most surprising result from the quartet of games was Real Salt Lake’s lopsided 3-0 win against Seattle Sounders – the only home team to actually triumph in the first leg. The third-year team many thought would make a run to an MLS Cup championship was picked apart by a very impressive Salt Lake side.

Other than Salt Lake, Philadelphia, New York and Colorado all suffered setbacks at home, and the odds are long to see any of those three making it through to the next round.

Here are four takeaways from the weekend: (more…)

Sporting KC’s Sapong Exceeds Own Expectations in Rookie Campaign

With the likes of Teal Bunbury, Kei Kamara and Omar Bravo ahead of him on the depth chart, it’s no surprise the Sporting Kansas City forward C.J. Sapong didn’t know how much he’d play in his rookie campaign.

But at the end of his first season in MLS, Sapong can reflect on a season in which he was the only player on his team to appear in each of the club’s 34 regular season games, 22 that he started.

“It’s been good, being able to have an impact right off the bat, and that’s all I really wanted to do coming in,” Sapong said in a phone interview. “It’s definitely a fulfilling feeling, and hopefully we can keep it going and get some silverware.” (more…)

Corona Could Still Be in U.S. Olympic Plans

Club Tijuana winger and Mexican-Salvadoran-American Joe Corona may be in the American Olympic plans, despite suiting up for Mexico last month. The player has had initial contact from the USSF about the upcoming camp in Germany.

Details haven’t been ironed out, and no commitment has yet been made on either side. But after playing for El Tri’s U-22s in a tour of Chile in September, Corona indicated he would be interested in testing the waters with the U.S. He then was not called for the PanAm Games for a Tri U-22 team with a depth of talent on the wings.

The contact shows that the U.S. has at least not given up on the winger, who has cooled off considerably after a hot start to the Mexican Apertura. (more…)

Colorado Rapids vs. Sporting KC

The Wiz (Sporting KC) are among the hottest team in the league right now, and the best by far over the second half of the season. It’s hard to imagine the fitting and starting of the Rapids providing enough to get by them. (more…)

U.S. Soccer

The MLS playoffs hit a new gear this weekend, with four matchups taking place over the course of Saturday and Sunday. Eight teams are left after the elimination of Columbus and FC Dallas, and within a week, the number will be trimmed even further.

Seattle Sounders won’t have Mauro Rosales for this weekend’s opening game against Real Salt Lake after his injury sustained in last weekend’s 3-1 win over Chivas USA.

Salt Lake, Seattle Offer Top Clash of Conference Semis

There’s no questioning the MLS Cup playoff match with the most potential to be a classic: Real Salt Lake and Seattle Sounders FC.

“It’s going to be a tough series, these are two good teams,” Sigi Schmid said in a conference call. “I think we’ve shown over the course of the season that we’ve been a quality team and certainly Salt Lake with their championship in 2009, they’ve got the same core of players that are there, they’ve been consistent over the last couple of few seasons and they’re a veteran team with a lot of experience.”

Despite Seattle being a bit younger (in its third season in MLS), both teams are very similar. Each features a well constructed and deep roster, one proven of competing across multiple competitions. Each has a rugged and disciplined defensive midfielder, Seattle’s Osvaldo Alson and RSL’s Kyle Beckerman. And each enters with something to prove – RSL in the middle of a six-game winless streak, and Seattle searching for its first-ever playoff win. (more…)

Experience Gives Houston Edge Against Philadelphia

Two of the more surprising entrants in the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs, also happen to be two of the teams with perhaps the biggest gulf in terms of postseason experience.

The Philadelphia Union, one of the league’s youngest teams, qualified for the playoffs in just the team’s second year of existence, and faces off in a two-leg series against the Houston Dynamo.

While the Dynamo don’t quite have the same roster as they did back in 2006-07, there are still plenty of leftovers from that championship-winning group, including Brad Davis and Brian Ching, who can help Houston as the playoff push begins on Sunday.

That makes it even more important for the veterans on the Union – the likes of Brian Carroll, Faryd Mondragon, and even Freddy Adu – to help give the young Union a lift, close the gap in experience, and remind young players to relax and keep calm as the playoff series gets underway.

“Because our group is an inexperienced group right now, we need any help from the veterans, any advice for the young players and get them to understand that there’s nothing different than when we started the season in the first game,” Philly coach Peter Nowak said. (more…)

US Soccer

The big game tonight features Colorado hosting Columbus in snowy Denver in the second play-in game. After Dallas was eliminated Wednesday night at home, Colorado could be the second of last year’s finalists to be put out of its misery early. The game will be streamed live, and free, on MLSsoccer.com.

Speaking of that, here’s a story on Marvell Wynne and why he didn’t play baseball. You can really tell there’s a lot of interest/familiarity with the team when the local paper is running this kind of story on the eve of a playoff match. But good for the rest of us.

Suggested Roster Changes for USMNT

The first few games for Jurgen Klinsmann have been tough. The utopian change that some thought would suddenly happen with Klinsmann at the helm has yet to happen. Not surprising if you ask me, but the current US manager has called in a few new faces that have helped the USMNT. The impact of Germany-American players wanting to wear the stars and stripes is intriguing, and it will be interesting to see how Fabian Johnson, Danny Williams, and Timothy Chandler fair for the US. However, there are a few players that Klinsmann has been calling up who need to be replaced. (more…)
