Seriously, what does Brad Davis have to due to earn a call up to the USMNT? The Houston Dynamo midfielder is consistently one of the best players in the MLS, yet without fail Davis’ name is left out of the US roster. He has often been dubbed “the left-footed David Beckham” and has been an MVP candidate for the MLS. Even with these accolades Davis cannot find playing time with the USMNT.
It is not like Davis is a one-year phenomenon either. In 2009 he led the league with 12 assists and added five goals to his name, and in 2010 he posted the same numbers. This year nothing has changed, and Davis is putting up MVP type numbers and leads the league in assists with 13.
Not to mention Davis is the type of player the US needs, a left-winger with pace that provides excellent service. According to Opta Jack, Davis has created 84 chances this season, which is 33 more than the next player in the MLS. It seems like a waste to not call up a player that is this talented.
The bad news is at 29 Davis is heading into the latter stages of his career. However, the Dynamo midfielder still has much to offer for the USMNT, and age cannot be considered a factor when Jurgen Klinsmann has called up Kyle Beckerman the past two friendlies and he is also 29.
Also, its not like the US has a hotbed of talented left-wingers. If anything, it is a position that has been lacking, since DaMarcus Beasley started to struggle with the US and his club teams. Young left-wingers Brek Shea and Chris Pontius have had a fantastic season and deserve their call-ups. Both have had their best seasons in the MLS this year and should play well for the USMNT.
Five call-ups for a player this talented are not enough, and hopefully that will change in the future. Just look- the last time Davis played for the US he set up the USMNT’s only goal. The man can perform at the international stage.
If Chris Wondolowski and Jonathan Bornstein get their opportunities to wear the red, white, and blue, shouldn’t Davis get his chance? Maybe, I am just complaining cause I have seen him perform for the Dynamo. What are your thoughts?
What bafoon dubbed him ” the left-footed David Beckham” ?
I don’t think anyone’s ever said that Brad Davis is a left winger “with pace.” A fantastic crosser of the ball from the left, certainly, but he’s not very fast.
About time someone mentioned brad… given our reliance on set pieces, i thought it was criminal he was left off the gold cup squad… with stu holden out, we could have really used quality set piece delivery. given our lack of creativity, set pieces is possibly the only way we battle back when down in a match.
without a doubt i think he warrants a roster spot if only to come on late and provide dangerous delivery
